Matured for 15 months in old and new French barriques, the wine displays vibrant blue fruits, spice, flavours of dark chocolate and coffee. Palate is plush and tannins are silk smooth with well-integrated oak characters. This elegant, cool-climate shiraz is medium bodied, and finishes with a delicious vanillin length and velvety texture.
Our 2016 Yakka has a dark violet hue, with lifted aromas of raspberries and plum, anise and baking spices. It is as complex as the plant we’ve named it after and, whilst excellent to drink now, it will also benefit with 10+ years cellaring.
The first parcel of Shiraz was harvested on the 1st March and the last parcel was picked on the 15th March. This was approximately 2 weeks ahead of the average harvest dates for Shiraz at Longview Vineyard. The season started with good soil moisture enabling early spring growth, followed by ideal flowering conditions in November. The hot weather through December and January helped control the growth and wet weather in February freshened the canopies to ensuring even ripening. The ripening period from veraison was ideal with exceptional acid retention and cool climate flavour development.
At winery the fruit is fermented cool, then left on skins for 10 days. After malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged in old and new (20%) French Oak Barriques for around 15 months.

95 Points - James Halliday's Wine Companion 2018. "You can't help but admire the integration of sweet sawdustry French oak with black-cherried fruit and assorted spices and woody herbs. Plum flavours add yet more flesh to sink into: smoke notes abit of fantasy; velvety texture the cushion on which it's all propped. It's a wonderful red to settle in with."

94 Points - Tony Love's Top 100 Wines 2017. "Longview's estate vineyards at Macclesfield put a bit of magic into this generous and warming shiraz that exudes a completeness and balance of dark and luscious fruit with finely spiced oak. The feel and here is full bodied yet there's no sense at all of heaviness.
93 Points - Huon Hooke. "Deep, dark, saturated red/purple colour with a rich, oaky and very ripe bouquet of blood plum, fruitcake and chocolate. Pretty smart stuff. There are cherry-cola and ripe plum to blackberry flavours, backed with ample ripe tannis. Fruit-sweet core, followed by a wall of ripe, supple tannins. Very good indeed."
