Bright, energetic, refreshing but cascading with silky fruit and exceptionally smooth tannins.
Lifted, fruit-forward aromas abound on the nose—blueberry, dark plum and bramble berry—interlaced with savoury herbs and floral notes. It blankets the palate with tang-tinged red fruit—pie charry, currant and wisps of blood orange melding with cassis liqueur and ripe, juicy plum. It’s medium–full bodied with excellent mouthfeel, good balance and complexity. The finish offers up lip-smacking tang and ripe fruit replays from the palate along with decent length on the aftertaste. Pour now to 2024 or so with grilled lack of lamb or a roast chook, aka chicken.

Winemaking

A challenging vintage with spring rainfall 40% below average. This helped disease control and provided good conditions for flowering and while yield was down, our healthy canopies were instrumental in protecting the fruit throughout the dry summer. From veraison through to harvest, daytime weather remained warm and dry, producing exceptional fruit flavour but as always, Longview’s cool nights assisted in slowing down sugar development and maintaining excellent acid retention.
Yakka Shiraz is Longview’s mainstay and the hardy variety handles the vineyard’s tough, rocky soils through the toughest of vintages – just like the plant after which it is named. Sourced from 5 distinct blocks on our estate, all of which are north facing, Yakka shiraz fruit is picked based on a flavour profile of blue fruit and spice with up-front tannin in the berry. Hand harvesting began on the 15th of March, at daybreak, then chilled overnight to preserve fruit flavour before being delivered to the winery. It is crushed and de-stemmed into open fermenters with a small percentage of whole berries. The wine enjoys a long, cool ferment 3 pump overs per day. It is then pressed, settled and racked into a mix of new and old puncheons and hogsheads for up to 15 months.
Excellent to drink now and will benefit with 10+ years cellaring.

In The Spotlight
95 Points - James Halliday's Wine Companion 2018. "You can't help but admire the integration of sweet sawdustry French oak with black-cherried fruit and assorted spices and woody herbs. Plum flavours add yet more flesh to sink into: smoke notes abit of fantasy; velvety texture the cushion on which it's all propped. It's a wonderful red to settle in with."

Bronze Medal - 2017 Decanter Asia Wine Awards
94 Points - Tony Love's Top 100 Wines 2017. "Longview's estate vineyards at Macclesfield put a bit of magic into this generous and warming shiraz that exudes a completeness and balance of dark and luscious fruit with finely spiced oak. The feel and here is full bodied yet there's no sense at all of heaviness.
93 Points - Huon Hooke. "Deep, dark, saturated red/purple colour with a rich, oaky and very ripe bouquet of blood plum, fruitcake and chocolate. Pretty smart stuff. There are cherry-cola and ripe plum to blackberry flavours, backed with ample ripe tannis. Fruit-sweet core, followed by a wall of ripe, supple tannins. Very good indeed."

4 Stars Winewise -Lester Jesberg. “The Adelaide Hills region continues to show its strength with shiraz, and this one is a good example. It’s vibrant and spicy, with good fruit weight and fine tannins.”
